James Gunn’s Superman has turned into one of the year’s biggest comic book events.
From the start, Gunn made it clear he wasn’t making another dark, brooding take on the Man of Steel. He wanted Clark Kent to feel warm. Someone you’d actually want to run into in a small town diner. That shift alone sets this version apart from most superhero films in recent years.
David Corenswet steps into the cape, and he looks like he walked right out of a classic Superman comic. His Clark is hopeful, quick to smile, and easy to root for. But the movie doesn’t shy away from throwing him into real trouble. Early on, a mysterious metahuman known as the “Hammer of Boravia” completely wipes the floor with him. That defeat pushes Superman to retreat to the Fortress of Solitude—where we also meet Krypto the Superdog, an instant scene-stealer.
The plot plays with familiar beats but isn’t afraid to twist the mythos. In this world, Kal-El’s parents didn’t just send him to Earth to survive. They wanted him to conquer it. That knowledge hangs over Clark like a shadow, making his fight to be a force for good even more personal.
The supporting cast is stacked. Rachel Brosnahan nails Lois Lane’s sharp wit and determination. Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor oozes arrogance, but he’s also the kind of villain you can’t look away from. Gunn also sprinkles in plenty of cameos and DC deep cuts, giving fans reasons to rewatch just to catch them all.
When it hit theaters in July 2025, the movie blew past box office expectations, becoming the highest-grossing Superman film in U.S. history and pulling in over $580 million worldwide. Critics praised its heart, humor, and optimism—three things that can be hard to balance in a superhero blockbuster.
For fans eager to watch it again, the film lands on digital August 15 and on Blu-ray/4K September 23. Bonus features include behind-the-scenes footage, a closer look at Krypto, and deep dives into the Daily Planet and Lex Luthor’s world.
And this isn’t a one-off. Gunn has already teased the next wave of DC Universe stories, starting with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in 2026. If Superman is the tone-setter, the DCU’s future looks brighter than it has in years.
