Sanya Malhotra Questions Society’s Expectations for Women After Motherhood
Sanya Malhotra, known for her powerful performances, recently shared her thoughts on how society expects women to sacrifice their careers after becoming mothers. She pointed out the double standards where men continue to focus on their jobs while women are expected to stay home and take care of the child.
The actor, who will be seen in her upcoming film Mrs, plays the role of a housewife who struggles to find her identity in a male-dominated household. The film, directed by Arati Kadav, will be available on Zee5 from February 7. It highlights the journey of a talented dancer whose dreams take a backseat after marriage.
During an interaction with ANI, Sanya raised a simple but important question. “Why is it always the woman who is expected to quit her job after having a child? The child belongs to both parents, right? Then why does the responsibility fall mostly on the mother? A balance is needed, and thankfully, we do see some examples of couples sharing duties equally. Society should learn from them,” she said.
Her words strike a chord with many women who face similar struggles. Despite progress in gender equality, traditional roles still dominate many households. A woman’s ambitions often take a hit, while men are expected to keep growing in their careers.
Director Arati Kadav also spoke about this issue. She believes that women shouldn’t have to choose between family and career. “Marriage is supposed to be a partnership. It should allow both partners to chase their dreams. But why do we assume that a woman’s ambition has to end after marriage?” she asked.
She further pointed out how men often receive full support from their wives, allowing them to succeed. “A man’s life flourishes when he has a supportive woman. First, it’s the mother who takes care of him, then the wife steps in. But why do women always have to be the ones adjusting and making sacrifices?” she questioned.
These thoughts have sparked discussions among people, especially working women who juggle multiple responsibilities. Many agree that the burden of childcare should be shared equally. Others believe that societal norms are too deeply ingrained to change overnight.
Several real-life examples prove that it is possible for both parents to maintain a career while raising a child. Many modern couples are redefining parenting roles, proving that teamwork makes a difference.
Sanya’s upcoming film Mrs will likely resonate with audiences, especially women who have faced similar struggles. The movie aims to shed light on the silent battles many housewives fight daily. While times are changing, there’s still a long way to go in achieving true equality in marriages.
With more voices like Sanya Malhotra and Arati Kadav speaking up, conversations around these issues are gaining momentum. Society might still have outdated expectations, but change begins when people start questioning them.
As Mrs gears up for release, it’s not just a film—it’s a reminder that women deserve the freedom to choose their own path, both as mothers and as professionals.
